Biography:

Major Honors and Recognition

Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Vascular Surgery for “outstanding and sustained contributions both to the profession and to the Society” (2009). President of the Society for Vascular Surgery (2007-8). Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Vascular Surgery (1996-2003). Co-Editor of Rutherford’ Vascular Surgery, 7th and 8th editions. R. Fraser Elliott Chair in Vascular Surgery (1997-2011). Lister Prize for Surgical Research (1984). James IV Traveling Fellowship (1984).

Established the specialty of Vascular Surgery and Division of Vascular Surgery

Co-founder of Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery (1978) and president (1987). Established the Division of Vascular Surgery at the University of Toronto (1981). Chair of the Vascular Surgery Division (1978-2003). Developed the guidelines for training programs in Vascular Surgery which were the basis of establishment of the specialty by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (1980).

Advanced the specialty of Vascular Surgery through research

Basic Research. Received funding from the Medical Research Council of Canada (Canadian Institute for Health Research) continuously for more than 30 years to contribute to the basic understanding and application of ultrasound techniques for the diagnosis of vascular diseases. Supervised or co-supervised 43 MASc or PhD biomedical engineering students.  Clinical studies. Critical prospective analysis of the results of peripheral angioplasty and of open surgery to treat abdominal aortic aneurysm (the Multicenter Canadian Aneurysm Study).

Advanced the specialty through lectures and publication

Presented more than 400 lectures worldwide, including 19 distinguished or named lectures.  Published more than 325 papers and book chapters.  Co-edited the 7th and 8th editions of Rutherford’s textbook of Vascular Surgery.  Developed Vascular Web for the Society of Vascular Surgery and the other North American vascular societies.  Developed “Vascular Specialist”, a monthly periodical for the Society of Vascular Surgery.
